SURVEILLANCE

In London you are caught on CCTV up to 300 times a day. This body of research was made by accessing and making drawings of myself being captured on CCTV camera feeds available online. By documenting myself being watched, I could bring into question the relationship between the recorder and the recorded.

Layered Carbon Paper Prints using CCTV camera feeds

These prints were created using carbon transfer paper. Every 5 minutes the camera feed refreshed, and I would start a new layer, printing blindly on top of the previous drawing. This created a layered composition, aiming to capture the passing of time.

I used Marylebone road as a case study as it has one of the highest concentration of cameras. From these camera feeds I made a series of 300 drawings which I turned into animation frames. The animation follows someone walking down Marylebone road. It is arranged in a grid like a CCTV monitor. To give the impression that the viewer was being watched, I set up real CCTV cameras to face the audience.
